Designed for "A Radical Thing".
Featured in ITP Winter Show 2021, Gallatin Art Festival 2022.
Personal Statement
I wanted to explore and visualize text, language and poetry in art form while represent human communications in past, present and future as well as relationships among them. In the ITP class "A Radical Thing", we are encouraged to follow references from artists, technology and mythology for the final project. The final project consists of log line, setting, and 3D rendering from models that we create in class following the references. Hence the birth of this project - "poetry galaxy".
Background (Research/Context)
This project is based on three references: Poet Ocean Vuong who was born and raised on a rice farm in Vietnam then migrated to Connecticut as a refugee, Inuit Mythology that embraces nature, everything has spirit and simplicity, and artificial intelligence. I am drawn to the visualization illustrated in the poems, the spirits and playfulness represented in Inuit art and the non-human construction and representation of intelligence. The poetry galaxy represents human consciousness (past and present poetry collections that exist), collaborating with AI to generate poetry. The 3D sculpture created from the model is ritual object which can be stacked anyway upon spectators' desire and when constructed together the unity represents celebration of togetherness.
Audience (Who is your target audience)
The target audience is everyone that appreciate daily object that can be placed at home and admire poetry collections.
User Scenario (Run us through an ideal scene/scenario)
The ideal scene would be a loft by a window during a warm sunny afternoon with light shining through the window to allow reflective light onto the sculpture. The background will play the poetry generates by the "Poetry Galaxy".
Implementation (Work/technical Description) What't it made of? What's the game plan?)
The sculpture is made of 3D modeling and rendering using MOI and Adobe Substance Stager. The sculpture then will be the output onto 3D printing in maker space using biodegradable resin. The poems will be enter into Google "Verse by Verse" AI to generate a collection of poems. For the winter showcase I will pre-recording poetry reading to be played in the background. The game plan will leverage Open AI and automate the output of poetry based on input data set.
